Hamilton Pub Raises £5000 for British Heart Foundation Following Patron’s Heart Attack
Staff and regular customers at a bar in Hamilton came together to raise an impressive £5000 for charity after one of their patrons suffered a heart attack on the premises. The Butterburn Bar and Lounge in Hamilton organised a charity day that saw the community come together to support a good cause.
The funds were raised through a variety of activities, with £3110 donated directly to the British Heart Foundation (BHF) via a JustGiving Page. The remaining amount was used to purchase and install a defibrillator outside the pub, ensuring the safety of patrons in case of emergencies.
The owners of the Butterburn, Stevie and Dot Mair, decided to support the BHF after their friend and regular customer, Craig Jack, experienced a heart attack at the bar in April of the previous year. Craig, 62, described the episode as feeling like “someone sitting on my chest.” Thanks to quick medical intervention at Hairmyres Hospital, Craig received treatment for a 70% blocked artery and had two stents fitted. Reflecting on his experience, Craig acknowledged that his outcome could have been much worse if he had delayed seeking medical help.
In celebration of Craig’s recovery and as a way to give back to the community, the Butterburn Bar organised the fundraiser to install a defibrillator outside the premises. The defibrillator is now registered on the BHF’s Circuit – National Defibrillator Register, ensuring its availability for public use as needed.
Angela McCormack, BHF Fundraising Manager, expressed gratitude to everyone involved in the fundraiser, emphasising that the support helps the foundation continue its crucial research in preventing, treating, and curing heart and circulatory diseases.
