Central Scotland Conservative MSP Meghan Gallacher has raised concerns over the extended discharge times patients are facing in NHS Lanarkshire, calling it a matter of “shame” for the Scottish Government. The dismay expressed by Meghan comes following responses to Freedom of Information requests unearthed by the Scottish Conservatives, detailing the magnitude of delayed discharges within the health service, where patients, despite being deemed fit to leave hospital, remain due to the lack of appropriate care arrangements.
The obtained data from NHS Lanarkshire exposed a staggering longest delayed discharge period of 702 days, with an average delayed discharge time of 45 days. This revelation contradicts the pledge made in 2015 by the then SNP health secretary, Shona Robison, to eliminate delayed discharges from hospitals in Scotland. The Conservative MSP emphasised that these extended waiting times not only impact the affected patients significantly but also have adverse repercussions on other patients in NHS Lanarkshire, leading to prolonged wait times at A&E and last-minute operation cancellations due to bed shortages.
Meghan asserted that it is disconcerting that patients have to endure such lengthy delays under the SNP’s administration, despite the past commitment to eradicate delayed discharges. Calling for prompt action, she urged the current SNP health secretary, Neil Gray, to address this crisis in NHS Lanarkshire without delay. In response, Health Secretary Neil Gray acknowledged the issue and highlighted the government’s commitment to invest £200 million in reducing waiting list backlogs, enhancing capacity, and expediting patient discharge processes.
The revelation of prolonged discharge times in NHS Lanarkshire underscores the pressing need for effective measures to address this critical issue and ensure timely and efficient patient care within the healthcare system. The accountability lies with the authorities to uphold their promises and prioritise the well-being of patients to facilitate a smoother healthcare journey for all individuals seeking medical attention.
