A new ScotRail ticketing app has been launched for Lanarkshire commuters, offering a seamless travel experience without the need to purchase tickets in advance. The Tap&Pay app is initially available for travel in the Strathclyde area and routes between Strathclyde and Edinburgh, with the aim to expand its coverage across the network if successful. The app can be downloaded from app stores, allowing customers to enjoy ticket-free travel using a single-use barcode system.
The app generates a unique barcode that can be scanned at ticket gates and on mobile devices, similar to ScotRail’s existing mTickets system. By scanning the barcode, the app logs customers’ journey details and automatically calculates and charges the best available fare at the end of the journey based on the travel distance and time. Customers making multiple trips on the same route within a week will never pay more than the cost of a weekly season ticket, ensuring cost-effectiveness for frequent travellers.
Claire Dickie, ScotRail Commercial Director, expressed the company’s commitment to enhancing the travel experience for customers through the Tap&Pay app, providing a smarter and more convenient way to travel. The app aims to offer seamless travel experiences and ensure customers receive the best value fares for their journeys. Working in partnership with Tracsis, the app has been nominated for ‘Ticketing Technology of the Year’ at Transport Ticketing Global 2025, highlighting its innovative approach to ticketing solutions.
By offering a more efficient and flexible ticketing system, the new ScotRail app aligns with the company’s dedication to improving customer satisfaction and streamlining the travel process. With the potential to expand its coverage and enhance the overall rail travel experience, the Tap&Pay app represents a significant step towards modernising ticketing services for commuters in Lanarkshire and beyond.
