Stirling Retailers Gather for Crime-Busting Meeting
Stirling business owners recently convened at WorKing Flexispaces on King Street to gain insights into shoplifting trends and strategies to combat crime in the city. The gathering, known as the Crime Trends Briefing, aimed to equip retailers with the knowledge and tools to tackle criminal activities effectively.
Hosted by Retailers Against Crime (RAC) and Go Forth Stirling Business Improvement District (BID), the meeting shed light on the various techniques employed by shoplifters, including ways to bypass security measures and the common practice of creating distractions to facilitate theft. The event emphasized the crucial role of cooperation among businesses in sharing information to bolster community vigilance and address criminal activities.
During the briefing, RAC introduced the SentrySIS crime-fighting tool, which enables users to share real-time information and alerts regarding thefts and other crimes occurring in the city. Jitka Fleglova, the BID’s communications and partnership manager, highlighted the power of collaborative efforts in creating safer communities and reducing crime through shared intelligence and resources.
Natasa Wilson, RAC’s Intelligence Co-ordinator, highlighted the rising incidents of violent crime and showcased how retailers can leverage the SentrySIS app to identify active criminals in the Stirling area, access crime incident alerts, and tap into a database containing details of over 16,000 offenders. The organisation collaborates with law enforcement and business members to analyse and circulate crime reports, providing valuable insights into criminal modus operandi to enhance preparedness and vigilance among retailers and staff.
Stephanie Karté, RAC’s National Operations Manager, recounted a successful instance where the SentrySIS reporting app aided in apprehending individuals involved in an assault, underscoring the importance of information sharing within the business community. The briefing encouraged more BID retailers to join RAC membership and utilise the innovative SentrySIS scheme to combat criminal activities effectively.
