Demand for Additional Mental Health Funding in West Lothian Surpasses Available Funds
The demand for voluntary mental health services in West Lothian has been steadily increasing, with applications for crisis support for adults rising for the fourth consecutive year. Despite receiving an annual allocation from Holyrood that has yet to exceed £500,000, the demand has consistently more than doubled the available funds. This imbalance has put pressure on the Voluntary Sector Gateway (VSG) in West Lothian, which received applications totalling over £1 million for a government grant of £467,000.
Stuart Barrie, Operations Manager for VSG, addressed the Economy Community Empowerment and Wealth Building PDSP meeting, highlighting the challenges faced by the charity in allocating the limited funds to meet the overwhelming demand. The VSG administers the Scottish Government’s Mental Health and Well-Being Fund, aimed at supporting community-based initiatives to improve mental health and well-being for adults facing distress, social isolation, and mental health issues.
An independent panel, including representatives from VSG, West Lothian Council, and HSCP, reviewed 81 applications from third sector organisations and social enterprises seeking £1.3 million from the oversubscribed fund. Despite the financial constraints, the VSG managed to support 37 organisations in the current financial year and will announce the successful initiatives for the next year soon.
The Scottish Government introduced this fund as part of its efforts to address the mental health challenges exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic. Councillor Sally Pattle commended the VSG for its diligent administration of the fund over the years and inquired about the fund’s continuity. Mr. Barrie expressed hope for an increase but acknowledged that future funding depended on the Scottish budget.
In conclusion, the rising demand for mental health services in West Lothian highlights the critical need for increased funding to support vulnerable adults in crisis. The unwavering dedication of organisations like the VSG in managing limited resources underscores the importance of addressing mental health challenges at a community level to ensure the well-being of individuals facing adversities. Efforts to secure additional funding to meet the growing demand reflect a commitment to prioritising mental health support in West Lothian and beyond.
