Lanarkshire Students Urged to Ensure Vaccinations Before Returning to College or University
Students from Lanarkshire are being reminded to check that their vaccinations are up to date before heading back to college or university this year. With infectious diseases such as meningitis posing a threat in crowded university and college settings, it is crucial for students to safeguard themselves against potential risks.
The Meningococcal ACWY (MenACWY) and MMR vaccines play a vital role in protecting individuals against serious diseases like meningitis and septicaemia. These vaccines are especially important for students, who are at a higher risk of developing invasive meningococcal disease compared to the general population. It is recommended that students ensure they have received two doses of the MMR vaccine to guard against measles, mumps, and rubella.
Additionally, the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is also recommended to protect against HPV-related cancers and genital wart infections. Dr. Henry Prempeh, a health protection consultant, emphasised the importance of being up to date with vaccinations before resuming studies to prevent the spread of infectious diseases on campus.
While the MenACWY vaccine covers the main forms of meningococcal disease, students should be aware of the signs and symptoms of meningitis and seek medical help promptly if they or a friend show any concerning symptoms. Ensuring vaccination status is up to date is crucial in protecting not only individual health but also in preventing outbreaks within educational institutions.
Students are advised to visit NHS inform for more information on checking vaccination status and eligibility for additional vaccines. By taking proactive measures to ensure vaccinations are current, students can contribute to creating a safer and healthier learning environment for all.
