Pool Leak Causes Delay in Opening of Blairgowrie Recreation Centre
Blairgowrie residents are facing a longer wait than expected to access the new £36 million Blairgowrie Recreation Centre due to a recent pool leak. The highly-anticipated facility is Scotland’s first Passivhaus swimming pool and recreation centre, boasting energy-efficient features. However, a small leak has prompted the delay in the centre’s opening, much to the dismay of local councillor Colin Stewart.
Stewart expressed his disappointment, stating, “Residents and taxpayers have been promised a replacement for years. The contractor (BAM) and the Council need to fix this ASAP.” The Blairgowrie Recreation Centre, located on Beeches Road, is designed to provide various amenities including a six-lane 25m swimming pool, sports halls, fitness suites, and more. The facility will cater to both the local community and Blairgowrie High School.
Initially scheduled to open in December 2024, the launch was rescheduled to early this year to avoid disruption to the school’s prelim timetable. Nevertheless, the recent leak has led to another setback. A Perth and Kinross Council spokesperson assured the public that the facility’s handover will only occur once all issues are resolved, including the current leak.
The existing recreation centre will remain operational until the new facility is ready for use. Despite the delays, the community eagerly anticipates the completion of the Blairgowrie Recreation Centre and looks forward to the enhanced recreational opportunities it will provide.
