Dumfries and Galloway residents ‘frustrated’ in bid to find out power cut information after Storm Eowyn

Residents in Dumfries and Galloway have expressed frustration in their attempts to obtain information about power outages following Storm Eowyn. The region experienced significant power cuts, leaving more than 45,000 homes without electricity at one point. Despite the round-the-clock efforts of engineers from Scottish Power Energy Networks (SPEN) to restore power, approximately 300 properties still remain affected days after the storm hit.

While residents acknowledge the hard work of the engineers, there have been complaints about the lack of communication from SPEN. Many residents struggled to access information about when their power would be restored. In some cases, individuals were given restoration times only for them to change multiple times, leaving residents perplexed and uninformed. South Scotland MSP Colin Smyth highlighted the challenges faced by constituents in reporting power cuts and receiving accurate restoration updates, describing the situation as unacceptable.

SPEN’s CEO, Nicola Connelly, visited Dumfries and Galloway to oversee the restoration efforts. The company stated that they have been actively reaching out to customers, including sending over 270,000 SMS messages to those on the priority services register and providing welfare support such as warm hubs and food vans. The storm caused a significant impact on SPEN’s network, with the company handling an influx of over 92,000 calls since the storm hit.

Despite the challenges, communities in Dumfries and Galloway have shown resilience and support as SPEN continues to work on reconnecting homes to the power grid. The company expressed gratitude for the understanding and patience of those still without power.

In conclusion, the aftermath of Storm Eowyn in Dumfries and Galloway has brought to light the importance of effective communication during such crises. While commendable efforts have been made to restore power, the need for clear and consistent updates for residents remains crucial to ensure transparency and support during challenging times. The collaboration between residents and power companies in the face of adversity highlights the strength of community spirit in overcoming obstacles together.
