A remarkable charity hero has achieved an extraordinary feat by completing a mountain peak challenge in Scotland, conquering a total of 511 hills in just four months. Sam Brunswick, a 23-year-old aerospace engineering graduate and British Army reservist, embarked on his epic journey in August 2024. He completed the challenge shortly before Christmas, having walked over 2,000km and spent a total of 788.5 hours over 122.5 days, with some portions of the challenge tackled on a mountain bike. The challenge involved scaling every Munro, Munro Top, and Island Corbett in Scotland.
Originally from Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire, and raised in Portincaple, Argyll and Bute, Sam has always considered Scotland his home. His motivation for taking on this monumental challenge was to explore more of his homeland before transitioning to full-time service in the Army in 2025. Through a fundraising page he set up, Sam raised an impressive £2,115 for three chosen charities – Scottish Mountain Rescue, Cancer Research UK, and Help for Heroes.
Sam’s choice of charities held personal significance for him, having been impacted by the loss of his grandmother to bowel cancer and witnessing the support provided by Help for Heroes to his friends. He also expressed admiration for the dedicated efforts of Scottish Mountain Rescue teams, whom he hopes to join in the future.
Reflecting on his journey, Sam highlighted the mental and physical challenges he faced, including navigating the demanding Cuillin Ridge Traverse with his father. Despite encountering tough conditions like thigh-deep snow while traversing the Fisherfield Six – known as Scotland’s most remote hills, Sam persevered through moments of doubt and exhaustion to successfully complete his mission.
As he concluded his four-month expedition on Ben Lomond, Sam celebrated surrounded by supporters, playing the bagpipes. Looking ahead to his military career, he emphasized the importance of preparation, leaning on support networks, and being adaptable to the unpredictable nature of mountain terrain and Scottish weather.
Sam’s incredible achievement and fundraising efforts have not gone unnoticed, with Scottish Mountain Rescue expressing gratitude for his contributions to their cause. Sam’s unwavering determination and commitment serve as an inspiration to others, showcasing the power of perseverance and passion in making a positive impact within communities.
