**ScotRail Fare Increase Sparks Concern Among Passengers**
Passengers are set to face further financial strain as ScotRail announces a four per cent fare increase scheduled for April 1. This news follows a nine per cent hike in fares just last year, with critics warning that train travel is becoming increasingly unaffordable for many commuters.
Unions, such as ASLEF, have strongly criticised the decision, highlighting the impact it will have on passengers who are already grappling with the rising cost of living. The increase in fares comes at a time when the Scottish Government is actively promoting the use of public transport and aiming to reduce car journeys by 20 per cent by the end of the decade. Despite these efforts, progress towards this goal has been described as minimal.
Mark Ruskell, transport spokesperson for the Scottish Greens, expressed concerns over the fare hikes, emphasising the importance of making rail travel accessible and affordable for all. He criticised the reintroduction of peak rail fares by the SNP shortly after the Greens secured their removal, stating that the increased costs will deter people from using trains and hinder efforts to create safer and cleaner communities with fewer cars on the roads.
Kevin Lindsay, ASLEF Scottish organiser, condemned the fare increase, particularly highlighting the disconnect between this decision and the Scottish Government’s targets to reduce car usage. The timing of the increase, coming shortly after the restoration of peak fares, has been met with frustration from passengers who are now faced with higher costs for rail travel.
Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop defended the fare increase, stating that the Government aims to keep public transport as affordable as possible while generating revenue to maintain services and invest in infrastructure and fleets. The 3.8 per cent fare increase, although lower than the previous year’s 8.7 per cent rise, still exceeds the rate of inflation seen in December.
