Two women who were involved in the looting and riots in Hull city center have managed to avoid jail time despite their actions. Elizabete Zvirgzdina and Lucy Houghton were seen handling stolen Crocs shoes taken from the Shoezone shop during the violent incidents. Zvirgzdina, 19, admitted to burglary at the Lush store and burglary with intent to steal at the 02 store on August 3. Both Zvirgzdina and Houghton were also guilty of handling stolen goods from Shoezone on the same day. The court heard that the women picked up the stolen shoes that had been dumped on the pavement outside the store after a break-in.
The prosecutor, Jennifer Gatland, mentioned that while the two women were not involved in the violent disorder, they were clearly part of the looting that took place. Zvirgzdina was caught on CCTV entering various stores and taking items during the chaos. Both women voluntarily turned themselves in to the police a few days later. Zvirgzdina even admitted to having cannabis in her possession during the incidents. In court, it was revealed that the women’s actions were planned to some extent, leading to substantial loss and damage during the looting and riots.
During sentencing, Judge Mark Bury acknowledged that the events of that day had a significant impact on the city of Hull. He highlighted the serious nature of looting in the context of public disorder. Despite their actions, the judge chose to show leniency towards Zvirgzdina, giving her an eight-month suspended prison sentence and ordering rehabilitation. Houghton was given unpaid work and rehabilitation for her involvement in the crimes.
