Fire concerns at proposed unmanned Longforgan battery energy storage system

Fire concerns have been raised by residents in Longforgan over a proposed unmanned battery energy storage system next to a railway line. The plans for a 50MW battery energy storage system by Sunshine Project 01 Limited near Monorgan Farm have sparked worries about fire safety in the area. The company has held several consultation events to address these concerns, with two events in Longforgan in January bringing to light the worries of the local community.

Residents expressed apprehensions about fire safety at the unmanned site, citing past incidents of exploding batteries in Perth that affected transportation routes. They questioned who would raise the alarm in case of a fire at the site. Other concerns raised included the potential impact on the environment, access issues, noise, and increased traffic in the rural area.

Local councillors, Angus Forbes and Alasdair Bailey, have been contacted by numerous worried residents regarding the proposed project. Councillor Forbes highlighted the community’s concerns about the construction and maintenance phases of the project, emphasizing the need for thorough consideration and community engagement. Councillor Bailey pointed out the importance of holding consultation events closer to the site to ensure effective community involvement.

During the pre-application notice presentation to the council, Councillor Ken Harvey highlighted access challenges and existing road issues in the area surrounding the proposed site. First Minister John Swinney encouraged active participation in the planning process from those concerned about the project’s potential impact.

Sunshine Project 01 Ltd’s director, Philip John, responded by stating their commitment to addressing local concerns raised during the consultations. The company aims to incorporate community feedback into the project design to mitigate negative impacts and ensure compliance with planning regulations.

In conclusion, the proposed battery energy storage system in Longforgan has sparked significant apprehension among residents due to fire safety and environmental concerns. Community engagement and careful consideration of local feedback will be crucial as the project progresses through the planning stages to address these issues effectively.
