Scottish rugby icons are scheduled to make a special visit to Dumfries and Galloway as part of Doddie’s Grand Tour 2025, spearheaded by former Scotland captain Rob Wainwright. A group of approximately 300 cyclists, including renowned figures like Roger Baird, Scott Hastings, Mark Beaumont, and Dougie Vipond, will journey across the region on Wednesday and Thursday.
The event, which is aimed at raising funds for the My Name Doddie’5 Foundation, was set up by the late Scottish rugby star Doddie Weir after his MND diagnosis. Starting from Dublin and culminating at Murrayfield ahead of Scotland’s Six Nations game against Ireland, the tour will pass through Stewartry, Annan, Langholm, and Moffat rugby clubs in Dumfries and Galloway.
On Wednesday, the team is anticipated to reach Stewartry RFC’s base at Greenlaw near Castle Douglas from 8 am to 10.30 am, followed by a visit to Annan RFC’s Violetbank ground around noon before proceeding to Langholm. The cyclists will continue their route through the Scottish Borders, returning to Dumfries and Galloway on Thursday with a stop-off scheduled in Moffat around 9.15 am.
Residents in Dumfries and Galloway are encouraged to show their support by welcoming the cycling team, and activities such as offering bacon rolls and refreshments are part of the warm reception planned for the riders.
