Young Renfrewshire Man Caught with Indecent Images of Children on Phone
A young man from Renfrewshire has been placed under supervision after being discovered with images of child sex abuse on his phone. Kerr McGettigan, now 22 years old, was caught with a collection of Category A, B, and C images and videos on his iPhone. Paisley Sheriff Court heard that the police received information about McGettigan downloading indecent images of young children onto his device.
The public protection unit in Paisley acted on intelligence received in June 2023, indicating that McGettigan had downloaded child sexual abuse material in January 2022 at an address in Dennistoun Road, Langbank. A search warrant was granted, leading to the discovery of the incriminating images on McGettigan’s phone. A total of seven images and 40 videos were found, with no internet search history to trace their origin.
During the court proceedings, McGettigan admitted to possessing the indecent images between September 2021 and June 2023. His defence agent highlighted that despite the seriousness of the offence, the number of images found was relatively low considering the timespan. McGettigan confessed to falling into criminal behaviour on the internet as a teenager, showing remorse and understanding the gravity of his actions.
Sheriff Brian Mohan emphasised the dangers of the internet and its role in facilitating such crimes, noting the ripple effects caused by the demand for such material. As a result, McGettigan was placed under 18 months of supervision by the social work department and added to the sex offenders’ register for the same duration.
