Some popular baby names are at risk of becoming ‘extinct’ in 2025, including surprising royal titles according to a recent report. The list of names that might fade away has been compiled by BabyCenter, a top US parenting website known for analysing baby name trends annually. The report highlights names that have taken a significant tumble in 2024 and are potentially on their way out of fashion.

Celebrities often influence baby name trends, with unique or trendy names gaining popularity when chosen by A-listers for their children. However, the reverse is also true as names can quickly fall out of favour. The report noted a decline in boy names ending in ‘-aden’ in 2024, with names like Jaden plummeting by 162 spots. Interestingly, even royal names are not immune to this trend, with names like Catherine, Anne, Phillip, Albert, and Edward, all members of the British royal family, dropping more than 100 spots each.

Surprisingly, names from the ’80s and ’90s are also losing their appeal, with monikers like Jamie, Erin, Kelsey, Chelsea, and Alexis facing a decline in popularity. The report also highlighted a decrease in nickname-names like Liv for girls and Billy for boys. Some nickname-names, such as Ellie and Liam, remain popular, but others are slowly fading into obscurity.

Further analysis revealed a list of girl names at risk of extinction, with names like Jamie, Katie, Remy, and Liv seeing the steepest decline in popularity. On the boys’ side, names like Jamal, Esteban, Cannon, and Taylor are among those facing a sharp decrease in popularity.

As trends in baby names continue to evolve, it’s clear that certain names may fall out of fashion while others rise in popularity. Parents looking for unique or timeless names may need to navigate carefully to ensure their child’s name remains both meaningful and relevant in the years to come.
