Cathedral Primary School in Motherwell recently celebrated a significant milestone, marking its 150th anniversary with a special Mass. The school hall was filled with pupils and staff who gathered to commemorate the opening of the school and honour the parish and school’s rich history. Led by Bishop Toal as the principal celebrant, the Mass was a joyous occasion enhanced by the beautiful music performed by the school choir under the guidance of Mr. Greechin. A striking floral arrangement, graciously donated by a parent, adorned the altar as a heartfelt gesture of thanks from Cathedral pupils to their dedicated teachers and helpers.
In attendance at the special Mass were Provost Kenneth Duffy and the council’s education convener, Councillor Michael McBride, who presented commemorative 150th anniversary medals to both pupils and staff. These medals, featuring the school badge and an image of Our Lady, symbolised the school’s enduring legacy. A poignant moment occurred when three generations of the McGuire family received their medals – Mary, 87, who attended the school in the original 1895 building; her son Frank, a former student from the 1950s/60s; and her granddaughter Sophie, a present P7 pupil.
Provost Duffy expressed his admiration for the event, stating, “This Mass was a wonderful way to begin the 150th-anniversary celebrations. It was inspiring to see the Cathedral community come together to honour their shared history and look forward to the future with hope and joy.” Head teacher Graeme Young reflected on the significance of the milestone, highlighting the dedication, faith, and resilience embodied by all who have been part of Cathedral’s journey. Exciting events have been planned throughout the anniversary year to celebrate this special occasion with pupils, staff, families, and parishioners.
One of the upcoming highlights will be a special Mass at the Cathedral, featuring a Mass setting composed by Mr. Young dedicated to Cathedral pupils and staff. The celebration will also include a dedication of stones from the original 1895 building in their new location on the Cathedral grounds, along with an exhibition on the school’s history curated by primary seven pupils in St Bride’s Hall. The 150th anniversary of Cathedral Primary School serves as a testament to its enduring commitment to education and community over the past century and a half.
