A recent study suggests that engaging in a specific type of exercise may significantly reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. With nearly one million people in the UK affected by dementia, researchers are exploring ways to prevent cognitive decline. The study focused on the hippocampus, a crucial brain region for memory and one of the earliest areas affected by Alzheimer’s.
Mice were subjected to different exercise routines to observe the impact on markers of the disease such as ‘tau tangles’ and amyloid plaques. The results revealed a remarkable 63% decrease in tau tangles and a 76% drop in amyloid plaques in mice following a consistent aerobic exercise regimen. Additionally, there was an increase in protective ‘oligodendrocytes’, which play a role in brain health. Dr Augusto Coppi, one of the study’s senior authors, highlighted the potential of aerobic exercise in preventing Alzheimer’s, noting the lack of a known cure for the condition.
Aerobic exercise involves activities that elevate heart rate and oxygen utilization, including running, swimming, cycling, and walking. While the study focused on mice, researchers are optimistic about the potential benefits for humans and are planning clinical trials to validate these findings.
