A driver wielding an axe assaulted another driver and collided with a police car before crashing into a garden wall following a high-speed chase. John Douglas, who also terrorized a female driver in a separate road rage incident, has been sentenced to three years and four months in prison. The 35-year-old pleaded guilty to various charges, including dangerous driving, assault, threatening or abusive behaviour, and driving while disqualified. The court in Hamilton heard how Douglas, of Yule Terrace in Blackburn, attacked a man in Larkhall, South Lanarkshire, on April 16 the previous year.
The incident began when Douglas, waiting at traffic lights in Union Street around 4:30 pm, failed to move when the lights turned green. The victim in a works van behind him honked the horn to alert him, and Douglas reacted aggressively by getting out of his car, shouting about his identity, and following the victim through Larkhall. The confrontation escalated when Douglas trapped the victim at a dead end, punched him, and threatened him with an axe in front of witnesses who reported the incident to the police.
Upon the arrival of the police in a marked vehicle, Douglas intentionally collided with the police car, causing significant damage, before speeding away. During the ensuing chase, Douglas drove dangerously, going against traffic flow, running red lights, driving on pavements, and eventually crashing into a garden wall and lamppost. Although he attempted to flee on foot, officers quickly apprehended him.
In a separate incident on February 6, 2023, Douglas unlawfully took his mother’s car and engaged in dangerous driving, threatening behaviour, and driving without permission in Blackburn, Bathgate, and Whitburn. His lawyer acknowledged Douglas’ reprehensible actions and cited his struggles with substance abuse following a relationship breakdown as contributing factors to his behaviour. Douglas received a 40-month sentence, a new driving ban of 13 years and four months, which was backdated to his arrest in April.
