Over 100 People Illuminate Scots Hillside for Suicide Support Charities
In a heartwarming display of solidarity, more than 100 individuals came together to support suicide support charities by lighting up the hillside of Criffel in Scotland. Organised by friends Katy Brown and Lorna Hellam, the event, known as Lighting Up Criffel, saw participants from Dumfries and Galloway and beyond donning head torches and other light sources to illuminate the hill.
This event marked the beginning of the 12 Big Things initiative by Katy and Lorna in 2025. The duo plans to organise 12 events throughout the year to raise funds and awareness for charities that provide support to individuals struggling with suicidal thoughts and families affected by suicide. The captivating display of lights on Criffel was visible for miles around, drawing attention to the important cause.
As part of the event, some attendees carried special torches adorned with a photo and story of someone who lost their life to suicide. The group was led up the hill by members of the Buccleuch and Queensberry Pipe Band, creating a poignant and moving atmosphere.
Acknowledgements were extended to the Moffat Mountain Rescue Team, Ben for marshalling, and Mr. Purdie for generously offering the use of his land for parking. The 12 Big Things series aims to raise both funds and awareness for the charities Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) and Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide (SoBS).
Looking ahead, Lorna is set to take on a half marathon in February, while Katy plans to swim a marathon distance over the course of the month. Additionally, the organisers are gearing up to light up Sale Fell in the Lake District on March 15, continuing their mission to support those in need and promote mental health awareness.
