Mumsnet Ceases Photo Sharing After Child Sexual Abuse Images Found

Popular parenting forum Mumsnet has taken action to halt photo sharing on its platform after reports surfaced of child sexual abuse images being uploaded. Justine Roberts, the founder and CEO, revealed that five images were posted from two different user accounts late Sunday into Monday morning. Fortunately, the majority of the images were swiftly removed within an hour, with all traces eradicated by 4 am. Roberts disclosed that the offensive content was immediately reported to the Metropolitan Police, and a meeting with law enforcement has been arranged. Moderators were first alerted to the images through user posts, prompting the activation of the platform’s automatic moderation system following multiple user reports.

In an interview with the PA news agency, Roberts detailed the measures taken in response to the incident: “As a temporary measure, we have suspended the ability to post images on site and we are working on implementing AI filters to flag illegal/disturbing images before they appear.” She added, “We’re also liaising with external specialists to see if there are any further tools we can employ to help us prevent this from happening again in the future.” It is anticipated that AI filtering technology will be operational in the coming days, following which image uploading functionality will be reinstated.

Since its inception in 2000, Mumsnet has grown to become one of the largest parenting communities in the UK, attracting around nine million unique visitors each month. The Metropolitan Police has been approached for a statement regarding the matter. Stay updated with the latest news from Scotland and beyond by signing up for our daily newsletter.
