Larkhall Residents Rally for Full-size Games Hall at New Leisure Centre
A petition advocating for the inclusion of a full-size games hall in the new Larkhall Leisure Centre has garnered over 1200 signatures, signifying the community’s strong desire for enhanced facilities. The campaign, led by community groups and residents, aims to address concerns over the proposed £24 million sports centre’s current plans to provide sporting space at Larkhall Academy rather than within the facility itself.
During a recent public meeting, attended by more than 50 residents, the pressing need for a full-sized games hall was reiterated. Community representatives are now exploring additional funding options to incorporate court space into the new centre. Construction is slated to commence this summer, prompting residents to voice their concerns over what they perceive as a downgrade from the existing facility.
The Larkhall Plan Partnership (LPP), a coalition of local organisations including the community council, is spearheading the advocacy efforts. The group is working diligently to ensure that the new leisure centre meets the community’s long-term health and wellness needs. LPP Chair, Nancy Barr, emphasised the importance of having a facility that adequately serves the town’s growing population, especially in light of recent closures of community spaces.
Residents can support the petition by signing a paper copy at The Lighthouse community centre and reaching out to South Lanarkshire Council leader Joe Fagan to express their views. The LPP underscores the crucial role of community engagement in shaping the future of Larkhall and urges residents to make their voices heard before construction commences.
Larkhall councillors Ross Clark and Richard Neilson, along with Central Scotland MSP Meghan Gallacher, have pledged their support to the residents’ campaign. Councillor Fagan highlighted the substantial investment the council is making in the new leisure centre and assured the community of ongoing consultation on the project’s development.
In conclusion, the residents of Larkhall are actively advocating for a modern and fully-equipped leisure centre that caters to the diverse recreational needs of the community. With a united voice and unwavering determination, they are striving to ensure that the new facility aligns with their vision for a vibrant and inclusive town.
