Private detectives investigating the death of a Scottish tourist in Spain 12 years ago have issued a fresh appeal for a ‘mystery caller’ they believe has vital information to come forward. The team, led by retired Strathclyde Police detective David Swindle, has been looking into the case of Craig Mallon, who was killed in Lloret de Mar in 2012. The 26-year-old civil engineer, hailing from Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, was attacked following an altercation with a group of men at his brother’s stag party.
A woman had contacted the police to report that she was an eyewitness to the attack, but the tip was never followed up. Detectives are now urging the mystery female caller to come forward again as her information is deemed crucial. The woman, who made the call to the Spanish emergency services at 6.26 am on May 19, 2012, described a tall man and others involved in a fight.
The investigation team is set to present a dossier with details of 13 potential new witnesses to prosecutors. CCTV footage has shown some of the French men associated with the incident. Victims Abroad, an organization assisting families who have lost loved ones, along with a team of investigators, have identified four French men and nine associates believed to have information on the case.
For nearly 13 years, Craig’s family has been seeking closure and justice for his untimely death. With the new potential witnesses identified, including those present at the scene and friends in the vicinity, there is hope for progress in the investigation. Craig’s father, Ian Mallon, expressed the family’s anguish over the lack of closure and the need for accountability for those responsible.
The case took a turn when Spanish police initiated a Commission Rogatoire to interview two French men, only to abandon the process later. Swindle’s team is now working to find legal representation to present the information to prosecutors.
