A recent report has shed light on North Lanarkshire Council’s active role in Challenge Poverty Week. The council’s involvement in the annual event, overseen by the Poverty Alliance, was highlighted through various initiatives held during the week from October 7 to 13. The report, approved by councillors at a committee meeting, outlined the council’s engagement since 2019.

Themes centred around housing, transport, adequate incomes, food, communities, and volunteers, and a comprehensive programme of events was organised in North Lanarkshire. The activities were shared on the council’s website and social media platforms. Additionally, updates were made to the Tackling Poverty Action Plan and Local Child Poverty Action Report. Social media content related to the week garnered over 100,000 impressions.

Collaboration efforts were evident as the Tackling Poverty Team and housing staff worked with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and North Lanarkshire Advice Network to urge pension credit claims. The release of four animated videos and information sessions by Citizens Advice bureau witnessed meaningful engagement, with 16 new volunteers recruited.

Various events took place, such as the Connect and Thrive gathering in Motherwell, finance briefings for new nurses, advice stalls at community centres, and engaging sessions at local shopping centres. Councillors commended the success of these activities and endorsed the council’s participation in the 2025 Challenge Poverty Week.
