Champion Scottish skier “lucky to be alive” after horror fall in Austria

**Champion British skier survives terrifying fall in Austria**

A Scottish skier, renowned as the best in the UK, is thankful to be alive after a harrowing 30-foot tumble down a mountainside in Austria. Kieran Troup, hailing from Aberdeen, suffered torn ligaments in his legs during the ordeal while skiing with companions on the Bluebird Pow trail in Kappl, on January 12. The shocking incident was captured on camera, showing the 24-year-old hurtling down the snow-covered slopes. Kieran recounted hearing “popping” sounds upon landing on his legs during the mishap, expressing, “I landed slightly off and my knee just completely tore. I twisted and can remember looking up at the sky and having this crazy vision of my ligaments tearing. It tore, tore and tore, and then all I heard was a pop. I was screaming in agony, and I’m fortunate to have survived.”

Throughout his career, Kieran, who is also the leading freeride skier in the UK, has endured several injuries, including fracturing both legs simultaneously, yet he labels this incident as the most terrifying to date. Scheduled for surgery in Glasgow on February 12, Kieran faces significant financial obstacles to recover fully. Due to insurance limitations, he couldn’t receive treatment in Austria as it was not deemed life-threatening. Therefore, he must return home at an estimated cost of £8,000 to £10,000 for the surgery, considering the potential long waiting times within the NHS for the required procedure.

Kieran aims to undergo treatment under the renowned Professor Gordon Mackay at the Mackay Clinic in Stirling, known for developing an innovative internal brace system for ligament tears. To fund his recovery, a GoFundMe page has been established. Despite the challenging road ahead, with an anticipated recovery period of eight to ten months before he can return to skiing, Kieran remains optimistic. He reassures his supporters of keeping them updated through his new YouTube channel, eagerly anticipating his comeback to the slopes.
