Dog owners across the UK have been issued a stark warning following reports of a mysterious illness affecting pets, leading some to unexpectedly “drop dead” after a seaside visit. The illness, suspected to be caused by a toxic plant, has resulted in the tragic deaths of several dogs and illnesses in many others in areas such as Cornwall and southwest Wales.
The poison plant, identified as Hemlock Roots or “dead man’s fingers,” is known to be highly toxic to both humans and animals. Fears have been raised after dogs have displayed symptoms like diarrhoea and vomiting, indicating potential ingestion of the deadly plant during walks on popular beaches. Local councils in affected areas, including Carmarthenshire County Council and Cornwall Council, have urged dog owners to avoid beaches temporarily and keep a close eye on their pets.
One such heartbreaking case involved a three-year-old English Bull Terrier named Duke, whose sudden illness and subsequent death were linked to a beach walk in Cornwall. Duke’s owner, Djamila Bousksou, described the distressing ordeal as her beloved pet had to be admitted to the ICU and eventually succumbed to the toxic effects of the plant.
Both councils have heightened awareness by placing warning signs and advising pet owners to keep their dogs on leads as a precaution. The tragic incidents have highlighted the importance of vigilance and prompt veterinary care if any dog shows signs of illness after beach outings.
