The East Kilbride railway station is currently undergoing a major transformation, with the old platform being torn up and a new station framework being erected as part of a 16-week closure. The steel frame for the new station has already been put in place, showcasing the progress of the improvement works.
Since January 25, rail replacement bus services have been in operation between East Kilbride and Thornliebank, with no trains running on the line until May 18. These works are part of a £139.8 million project to electrify the 14-mile line between East Kilbride and Glasgow Central. Additionally, new stations will be built at East Kilbride and Hairmyres on the sites of the old stations.
The new station building at East Kilbride is expected to be fully operational by June 2025. Construction on the station began in February 2024, with significant developments already underway. The platform has been extended by 51 metres, foundations for the new building have been laid, and the steel frame of the new station building has been erected.
Mark Ilderton, Scot Rail service delivery director, highlighted the importance of the works being carried out by Network Rail for the electrification of the railway on the East Kilbride line. Despite the temporary closure and the absence of train services, alternate transport plans have been put in place to ensure that passengers can still travel conveniently.
As the project progresses, communication channels will be used to inform customers about the replacement bus services and alternative travel routes available. Network Rail Scotland emphasised the significant enhancements being made to electrify and improve the railway line in East Kilbride.
