OpenAI’s ChatGPT encountered its second outage this year, prompting frustration among users regarding its perceived inconsistency and unreliability in 2025. The chatbot became inaccessible on Wednesday, February 5, leaving numerous users unable to utilize the system. Over 20,000 individuals reported encountering issues with ChatGPT, leading to a widespread disruption across various countries. Complaints on Downdetector, which monitors online outages, peaked at nearly 500 around 4.30 am on Thursday, February 6 in the UK as users struggled to log in or receive responses from the AI. The outage affected regular users, businesses, and developers. While the majority of disruptions appeared to be in England, there were also reports of issues in the Glasgow area. Incidents of problems were still being reported around 10 am. OpenAI acknowledged the problem and initiated an investigation. The company later confirmed that some users started to see signs of recovery from the API and Sora services. Although the exact cause of the outage remains unknown, OpenAI assured users that a solution had been implemented to rectify the issue.

Social media platforms were flooded with frustrated users venting their dissatisfaction during the outage. Some expressed sentiments of not being surprised by the recurring problem, while others joked about the chatbot getting “sick” of their complaints. This marks the second significant disruption ChatGPT has faced in 2025, having previously experienced downtime on January 23 for nearly an hour, resulting in users encountering error messages.
