Johan Van Heerden, a committee member and former Royal Engineer, expressed the importance of this initiative, stating, “As a committee, we decided to try to raise the funds to get it cleaned. We need someone with the right chemicals to do it, and the specialists who quoted us deal with memorials all around the area.” He further added, “If we get a bit extra, we’d like to update the area. At night time it’s not lit up so we’re going to try to get some solar-panelled lights and a few other things.”
