Eiffel Tower-sized asteroid set to hit Earth in 2082 could result in ‘prolonged winter’

An asteroid the size of the Eiffel Tower is on a collision course with Earth and could strike in 2082, potentially causing a prolonged winter, according to scientists. The asteroid, named Bennu, is a major concern and ranks third on NASA’s list of potential impact threats. While the chances of impact are slim, at 1 in 2,700 or 0.04 percent, the consequences of such an event could be catastrophic.

Bennu, classified as a medium-sized asteroid measuring about 500 metres across, recently took a backseat to asteroid 2024 YR4, which has a 1.3 percent chance of hitting Earth in 2032. Planetary defence groups at the United Nations are actively monitoring these threats and preparing for potential impacts.

Experts have run simulations to predict the aftermath if an asteroid like Bennu were to strike Earth. The results show that such an impact could lead to a global winter, drought, and significant disruptions to climate, atmospheric chemistry, and photosynthesis. Ozone levels could plummet, temperatures could drop by 4 degrees Celsius, and rainfall could decrease by 15 percent, resulting in a disruption of food production and ecosystems.

The study also suggests that the impact could release iron-rich dust, affecting marine ecosystems for years. While the chances of a catastrophic impact are relatively low, the potential consequences highlight the importance of continued research and preparation for such events.

Bennu is a unique asteroid that has been the focus of intense scientific study. NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission collected vital samples from Bennu in 2023, providing valuable insights into the asteroid’s composition. These samples contain amino acids essential for life and nucleobases crucial for genetic material, shedding light on our solar system’s history.
