Glasgow cops bottled by Besiktas ultras in shocking attack ahead of Celtic clash

**Violence Erupts in Glasgow Ahead of Celtic vs Besiktas Clash**

In a distressing incident on Wednesday evening, police in Glasgow faced violence from a group of Besiktas ultras as they attempted to manage a disturbance on Sauchiehall Street. The situation escalated around 9:15 PM, leading to bottles being thrown at officers, resulting in one officer being knocked to the ground, though fortunately, none required medical attention.

As the Besiktas supporters, clad in black, gathered in significant numbers near Malone’s Irish bar, tensions grew. Initial footage captured the scenes of chaos, with police attempting to manage the group before the situation turned violent. Authorities responded by kettling the crowd on Bath Street in a bid to regain control.

Chief Superintendent David Robertson of Police Scotland described the disorder as “unacceptable” and reinforced the notion that such violence would not be tolerated. “Around 9:15 PM on Wednesday, we received reports of a large disturbance involving a group of men on Sauchiehall Street. During the incident, two officers were attacked, with bottles thrown and one officer knocked to the ground. They did not require medical treatment,” he stated, affirming the commitment to investigate the unrest.

This event unfolds as Celtic prepares to face Besiktas, an 18-time Turkish Super Lig champion, in an Europa League match that is highly anticipated among football fans. Notably, the violent incidents in Glasgow follow a tumultuous weekend marked by conflict at Hampden Park, where thousands attended semi-final fixtures for the League Cup. Reports from that occasion noted assaults on officers, as well as dangerous projectiles like fireworks and glass bottles being hurled at police.

Authorities are now intensifying their inquiries into both the incidents this week and the recent disturbances surrounding the League Cup. It is a stark reminder of the challenges that law enforcement faces during high-stakes sporting events.

In sum, this troubling episode not only highlights the potential for violence within football culture but also emphasises the necessity for robust policing strategies during such events, both to protect fans and maintain order. As investigations continue, the focus will undoubtedly be on preventing further incidents as European matches attract attention and supporters from around the world.
