Scottish fish and chips firm plunges into liquidation after nearly 25 years

**Scottish Fish and Chip Supplier Enters Liquidation After 25 Years of Service**

In a distressing turn of events for the Scottish food industry, Jon Dow Distribution (trading as J.D.R.B Ltd), a well-respected fish and chips supplier based in Angus, has been forced into liquidation after nearly 25 years of operation. This decision comes in response to a significant downturn in trade, marking a challenging year for numerous businesses across Scotland.

Jon Dow Distribution, established in 2002, was a family-run wholesale distributor renowned for supplying fresh and frozen goods to a variety of establishments, including fish and chip shops, restaurants, and cafés in the north-east region. The company was helmed by husband-and-wife team Colin and Joan Muir, who have been instrumental in its growth over the years. Located at Orchardbank Industrial Estate in Forfar, the business not only delivered quality products but also created a vital connection within the local food supply chain by servicing areas such as Inverness, Aberdeen, Montrose, and Dundee, among others.

However, following a sustained period of declining sales, the directors made the difficult decision to cease operations, stating it was with “regret” that all five employees were made redundant prior to the appointment of joint liquidators Geoff Jacobs and Alistair McAlinden from Interpath Advisory on October 26. A notice regarding the winding-up of the company was submitted to the Sheriff Court in Forfar shortly thereafter.

As liquidators move forward, they will aim to sell off company assets, which include four delivery vehicles. Furthermore, it has been confirmed that support will be extended to redundant staff in their applications for assistance from the UK Government’s insolvency service, whilst creditors can expect to be contacted in the coming weeks.

This unfortunate closure is reflective of the broader economic challenges facing Scottish enterprises in 2026, as increasing costs related to employment and national insurance contributions have compounded financial difficulties. Jon Dow Distribution is not alone in facing such hardships; other family-operated businesses, including Cars4You Limited in Edinburgh and BGL Contracts in Glasgow, have recently succumbed to financial pressures, leading to redundancies.

As the landscape of Scottish retail and hospitality continues to evolve, the plight of Jon Dow Distribution serves as a poignant reminder of the fragile nature of small businesses in today’s economy. Its legacy of serving the community will be missed, highlighting the need for local support and sustainable practices in an ever-challenging market.
