Humza Yousaf has issued a stark warning that the Israeli government’s pursuit of “revenge” has dangerously escalated tensions in the Middle East, bringing the region to the brink of all-out war. The former SNP leader highlighted the events of the October 7 massacre, which marked the anniversary of a brutal Hamas attack on southern Israel in 2023 that resulted in over 1,100 casualties and 251 individuals being taken hostage.
In response to the Hamas attack, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) launched a sustained military campaign on Gaza, causing an estimated 42,000 fatalities. The conflict further intensified as Israel targeted Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon, prompting retaliatory missile strikes from Iran towards Israel. Yousaf condemned the Netanyahu government for exacerbating instability in the region and accused them of disproportionate retaliation.
Yousaf’s criticism extended to the impact on innocent civilians, noting the widespread suffering caused by the conflict.
