President Joe Biden honoured the solemn occasion of the anniversary of the October 7 attacks in Israel with a poignant candle-lighting ceremony at the White House. The event, held one year since Hamas militants launched a surprise attack that resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 people and the taking of 250 hostages, was a moment of remembrance and reflection.
Accompanied by First Lady Jill Biden and Rabbi Aaron Alexander of the Adas Israel Congregation, President Biden stood in the Blue Room of the White House as Rabbi Alexander led a prayer in Hebrew and English. The prayer, known as “El Malei Rachamim” or “God of Mercy,” is traditionally recited during burial and memorial services to honour the deceased.
Following the prayer, President Biden lit a Yahrzeit candle, symbolising the anniversary of a person’s passing, before observing a moment of silence to pay respects to the victims of the tragic event. Although the ceremony was brief and solemn, with no formal remarks from Biden, earlier in the day, the President released a statement expressing his condolences and reiterating his administration’s commitment to justice and peace.
In his statement, President Biden acknowledged the loss of innocent lives, including 46 Americans, and he emphasised the need to support the survivors who continue to bear the physical and emotional scars of the attacks. He affirmed the United States’ unwavering support for the safety and security of the Jewish people and the nation of Israel, condemning terrorist groups like Hamas and reaffirming Israel’s right to self-defence.
President Biden also expressed concern for the hostages who remain captive a year after the attacks, pledging to exhaust all efforts to secure their safe return. He underscored the importance of achieving a ceasefire in Gaza, providing humanitarian aid to alleviate suffering, ensuring Israel’s security, and ultimately bringing an end to the ongoing conflict.
Reflecting on the significance of the October 7 attacks, President Biden remarked that the day will be remembered as a dark chapter in Palestinian history due to the violence unleashed by Hamas. He acknowledged the widespread suffering endured by civilians and reiterated his administration’s commitment to pursuing peace and stability for both Israelis and Palestinians.
