Neil ‘Razor’ Ruddock on his ‘terrifying’ weight problem: ‘I’d take a taxi 400 yards to the racecourse’

Former footballer Neil ‘Razor’ Ruddock faced a ‘terrifying’ weight problem that nearly cost him his life, he reveals. The 56-year-old, known for his time playing for clubs like Liverpool and West Ham, reflected on how his unhealthy lifestyle and excessive weight had a severe impact on his daily life. Despite his successful career which included over 460 club appearances and a cap for England, Ruddock struggled with his off-field habits, exacerbated by his ‘Razor’ persona.

In a candid interview with The Telegraph, Ruddock confessed that his diet, filled with alcohol and takeaways, needed to change drastically to save his life. During the Covid-19 pandemic, his weight reached a dangerous 27st, prompting him to shed 11st for the sake of his health. Encountering James Argent, who had undergone a significant weight loss transformation, inspired Ruddock to take action.

The weight gain not only posed health risks but also restricted Ruddock’s mobility, preventing him from simple tasks like climbing stairs or walking short distances. He admitted to resorting to taking a taxi for a 400-yard journey to the train station due to his physical limitations caused by excessive weight. Ruddock’s realisation of the extent of his decline came during his participation in the TV show ‘Harry’s Heroes’ where he clashed with Paul Merson over lifestyle advice.

Despite his past struggles, Ruddock now enjoys family life and cooking daily, having left his old habits behind. He embraces his ‘Razor’ nickname, albeit acknowledging that he has moved on from that persona. Reflecting on his journey, Ruddock emphasises the importance of his lifestyle changes in ensuring his well-being and looks forward to a healthier future.

Ruddock’s story serves as a reminder of the challenges many face in battling weight problems and the importance of making positive changes for a better quality of life.
