The emergence of explosively intensifying Hurricane Milton has bewildered veteran hurricane scientists who are calling this season the strangest of their lives.

As forecasters initially predicted a busy hurricane season given the favourable conditions, the early part of the year saw Beryl rapidly escalating to a Category 5 storm – the earliest on record to do so. However, from August 20th, the beginning of the peak hurricane season, to September 23rd, an unprecedented quiet spell was experienced, with no significant storm activity reported. This lull abruptly ended when five hurricanes surfaced between September 26th and October 6th, more than double the previous record. Interestingly, on Sunday and Monday, three hurricanes simultaneously existed in October for the first time ever.
