Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time world champion in Formula One, has recently opened up about his ongoing struggles with mental health. The racing superstar revealed that he has been dealing with depression since his teenage years, attributing it to the bullying he experienced at school and the intense pressure of his racing career.
Growing up in Stevenage with mixed-race parents, Hamilton also faced racism during his childhood. In a candid interview with The Sunday Times, he shared, “When I was in my 20s, I had some really difficult phases. I mean, I’ve struggled with mental health through my life.” Hamilton disclosed that he has battled depression from a very young age, around 13, as a result of the pressures he faced both in racing and at school, where he was subjected to bullying without having anyone to confide in.
During the global pandemic in 2020, Hamilton embarked on a journey of self-discovery and coping mechanisms. He began his days with early morning meditation followed by a run, aiming to find inner peace and clarity. Reflecting on this practice, he mentioned, “I would struggle initially to calm my mind… But it’s a really great way of getting in touch with myself, my inner feelings, understanding what I can do.”
Despite his achievements and success in the sport, Hamilton currently holds the sixth position in the driver standings in the 2024 season, having secured two Grand Prix victories. After 12 years with Mercedes, he is set to make a shift to Ferrari at the conclusion of the ongoing campaign. When asked if he has sought help from a therapist, Hamilton admitted to speaking with a therapist years ago, albeit without finding it particularly beneficial. However, he expressed a desire to find professional support for his mental health struggles today.
The 39-year-old racing icon’s willingness to share his personal mental health journey serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritising mental well-being and seeking help when needed, even for individuals in the spotlight. Hamilton’s honesty and vulnerability are commendable, shedding light on the challenges faced by many, regardless of their public image or success.
In a time where discussions surrounding mental health are gaining more prominence, Hamilton’s openness about his own struggles resonates with many, encouraging others to address their mental well-being without stigma. His story stands as a testament to the fact that seeking help and practising self-care are vital steps towards maintaining mental wellness, no matter one’s background or accomplishments.
