Residents in Florida are facing a challenging situation as they try to evacuate ahead of Hurricane Milton, with gas shortages causing congestion and travel difficulties.
Thousands of Floridians are scrambling to leave the area, leading to heavy congestion and other travel complications. In Pinellas County alone, up to 60 percent of residents have been instructed to evacuate, which includes the cities of Clearwater and St Petersburg.
Authorities are taking a proactive stance on storm preparations and evacuation following the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, which resulted in over 200 casualties across six states. Hurricane Milton is forecasted to hit Tampa on Wednesday, prompting Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to urge residents that time is running out to evacuate safely.
Gas shortages are adding to the challenges, with over 40 per cent of gas stations in the Tampa/St Petersburg area reported to be without fuel on Tuesday. Shortages were also experienced in other areas like Fort Myers/Naples and Gainesville, where approximately a quarter of stations faced similar issues.
Residents, such as Sarah from St Petersburg, recounted their struggles in finding gas before evacuating, with stations either out of fuel or selling premium grade at inflated prices. Social media posts revealed how gas shortages influenced decisions to evacuate or stay put, with some residents unable to find fuel for evacuation.
Despite the difficulties, residents are banding together to provide support and assistance to each other. The Florida Department of Transportation is closely monitoring developments with Hurricane Milton and has suspended interstate lane closures and operations on active construction sites in the storm’s projected path.
