Heart-racing video footage captures a hurricane plane enduring severe turbulence while navigating through Hurricane Milton, a recent report from The Independent reveals.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s hurricane hunters encountered a tumultuous journey as they flew a plane into the powerful Category 5 Hurricane Milton approaching Florida’s western coast. In a video from the Tuesday flight, NOAA researchers from the agency’s Commissioned Officers Corps can be seen gripping the interior of the aircraft as the storm’s 155mph (249kph) winds violently shake the plane. Amidst the dark gray clouds of the storm, only the wing of the aircraft is visible.
Dubbed the “Miss Piggy,” the crew braved the storm to gather crucial data aimed at enhancing forecasts and deepening their understanding of the hurricane. Sofia de Solo, a NOAA flight director, highlighted the significance of this data, mentioning its role in improving storm track predictions. The impending landfall of Hurricane Milton in a heavily populated and vulnerable area previously impacted by Hurricane Helene underscores the importance of this research mission.
