Three men from Minnesota have been found guilty of gang charges in connection to a federal crackdown on Tuesday, as announced by authorities. The convictions are linked to what prosecutors described as a lengthy period of violence and murder tied to a Minneapolis street gang. This latest development is part of a broader effort to address gang-related activities that has led to the indictment of numerous members or affiliates of two prominent Minneapolis gangs.
The jury’s decision to convict the three men marks a significant milestone in the federal operation against gang activity, with prosecutors citing the uncommon use of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) statute in this case. The RICO statute is typically utilised to target organised crime, and in this instance, prosecutors drew parallels between the defendants’ actions and those of organised crime syndicates like the mafia.
According to U.S. Attorney Andrew Luger, “The Minneapolis Bloods gang is a violent criminal enterprise. As the evidence proved, the defendants convicted today were members of that enterprise, and they carried out violence and murder on its behalf. As Bloods members, the rules these defendants lived by superseded all criminal laws and social tenets, such as respect for human life or concern for public safety.”
The individuals convicted include Desean Solomon, 34, who was found guilty of RICO conspiracy and using a firearm to facilitate murder. Additionally, Michael Burrell, 44, and Leontawan Holt, 26, were convicted on federal gun charges. The defence argued that the defendants acted in self-defence during violent altercations, and that they were part of a loosely affiliated group rather than a formal gang.
Prosecutors detailed how the trio had been linked to the Minneapolis Bloods street gang since at least 2020. Incidents in 2020 and 2022, including fatal shootings during altercations with rival gang members, formed the core of the prosecution’s case, alongside allegations of involvement in drug trafficking.
Sentencing for the convicted individuals will be determined at a later date. Overall, 17 alleged members of the Bloods gang have either pleaded guilty or been convicted following the broader federal investigation, which has concentrated on seven homicides as well as numerous drug trafficking and firearm offences. This concerted effort underscores the authorities’ commitment to combating organised criminal activities in the region.
