The effects of the worst-case-scenario hypothetical storm, called Hurricane Phoenix, could now become a reality for residents in Florida as they brace for the impending landfall of Hurricane Milton. Forecasters have issued warnings that this could be the “worst storm in a century” with potentially “life-threatening” consequences.
The projected path of Hurricane Milton is set to pass directly through Tampa, a city that has historically been fortunate in avoiding the brunt of hurricanes hitting the Sunshine State. However, the last time a major storm eye passed through Tampa was over 100 years ago. A simulation conducted by the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council in 2010, known as Project Phoenix, painted a grim picture of the possible aftermath if a Category 5 hurricane were to strike the area.
According to the simulation, the devastation could lead to 30,000 people missing, 165 fatalities, over 300,000 displaced individuals seeking shelter in surviving buildings, and significant damage to hospitals, schools, and infrastructure. The simulation also warned of potential environmental catastrophes at the damaged Port of Tampa, with an estimated total property damage cost of $200 billion.
In an updated version of the simulation in 2020, named Project Phoenix 2.0, realistic news footage depicted scenes of widespread destruction. The hypothetical storm surge submerged key infrastructure like the Tampa General Hospital and caused unimaginable damage to businesses, homes, and tourist destinations like beaches. The estimated cost of recovery from the 2020 simulation was around $300 billion, with a projected decade-long timeframe for restoration efforts.
The Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council used Project Phoenix 2.0 to conduct training exercises for business owners and emergency managers to prepare for such a catastrophic event. Authorities have issued evacuation orders for Florida residents, emphasizing the urgency of the situation as Hurricane Milton approaches with sustained winds of 165mph. President Joe Biden has stressed the critical nature of these orders, stating that they are a matter of “life and death”.
The National Hurricane Center has cautioned that Hurricane Milton could be one of the most destructive storms on record for west-central Florida. As the storm nears landfall, preparations and response efforts are underway to mitigate the potential impact and safeguard lives and property in the region.
