Climate solution: Form Energy secures $405M to speed development of long-awaited 100-hour battery

Form Energy, a company pioneering a longer-lasting alternative to lithium batteries, has achieved a significant milestone with the announcement of securing $405 million in funding. This funding boost is set to propel the development of a long-awaited 100-hour battery, a crucial advancement in the field of sustainable energy solutions. Form Energy plans to utilise this investment to accelerate manufacturing at its primary factory located in Weirton, West Virginia, alongside advancing their research and development efforts.

This development is deemed crucial in the fight against climate change, as the ability to manufacture long-duration energy storage at a commercial scale is vital for reducing carbon emissions. By ensuring clean energy availability even during periods when solar or wind energy may not be accessible, these innovative batteries play a pivotal role in promoting a sustainable energy landscape. Mateo Jaramillo, the CEO of Form Energy, expressed his pride in the team’s progress in scaling the iron-air battery technology, highlighting the potential impact of this advancement.

The $405 million funding was led by investment company T. Rowe Price, with additional contributions from GE Vernova – a General Electric energy business spin-off – and various venture capital firms. This substantial investment sets Form Energy on a path to expedite the deployment of multi-day batteries to meet the increasing demand for a cleaner and more reliable energy grid. The company’s mission to build energy storage for a better world is gaining momentum with the backing of these investors, signalling a significant step forward in sustainable energy solutions.

In contrast to the typical four-hour lifespan of lithium batteries, Form Energy’s innovative batteries employ a unique combination of iron, water and air to store energy for an impressive 100 hours. If successfully scaled, these batteries have the potential to bridge extended periods without sunlight or wind, offering a sustainable solution to energy storage challenges. Leveraging the abundance of iron as a key element, Form Energy aims to make this technology affordable and scalable, driving its widespread adoption in the renewable energy sector.

Collaborating with Great River Energy, Form Energy recently initiated the construction of its first commercial battery installation in Cambridge, Minnesota, scheduled to commence operations in 2025. Additional projects in Minnesota, Colorado and California are poised to come online next year, with plans for further installations in New York, Georgia and Virginia by 2026. To date, Form Energy has secured over $1.2 billion in funding, including substantial contributions from state and federal governments, underscoring the growing support for sustainable energy initiatives.
