Turkey’s navy has initiated the evacuation of its citizens from Beirut amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. The evacuation operation, aimed at over 2,000 people, began as Israeli airstrikes continued to target Hezbollah positions in Lebanon.
The first group of evacuees, including Turkish citizens and some foreigners, boarded a Turkish military ship in Beirut late on Wednesday. Among them was Zehra Cibbin, who described the harrowing experience of living under the threat of bombings and the decision to leave Beirut out of fear for their lives.
The Turkish military ships involved in the evacuation, including the TCG Bayraktar and TCG Sancaktar, are part of a convoy that also transported humanitarian aid supplies to Lebanon. The convoy departed from the port of Mersin with 300 tons of supplies, including food, hygiene kits, and shelter materials.
Turkish Ambassador to Lebanon, Ali Baris Ulusoy, highlighted the dual purpose of the operation – providing aid to the Lebanese people affected by the conflict and ensuring the safe return of Turkish citizens. He emphasised the impact of Israel’s aggression on Lebanon and the need to support those in distress.
The evacuation process involved thorough checks by Turkish soldiers and sailors before allowing individuals to board the ships. Abir Gokcimen, another Turkish citizen awaiting evacuation, expressed hope for the conflict to end soon so she can return to Beirut.
The escalating conflict between Israel, Hezbollah, and Hamas has led to significant casualties and displacement in the region. Turkey plans to organise more evacuation missions by sea if necessary, with considerations for charter flights to repatriate its citizens.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned Israel’s actions during a recent gathering, asserting Turkey’s readiness to counter any expansionist ambitions. The conflict in the region, propelled by various alliances and retaliatory attacks, has created a dire humanitarian situation.
As tensions persist and violence escalates, the international community closely monitors the situation in the Middle East. Turkey’s efforts to evacuate its citizens from Beirut signal a proactive response to safeguard its nationals amidst the ongoing conflict.
