Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs to Appear Before Trial Judge in Sex Trafficking Case
Hip-hop mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs is slated to make his initial court appearance before a judge who is anticipated to oversee his impending trial on sex trafficking allegations. Combs will be transferred from a correctional facility in Brooklyn to Manhattan federal court for a hearing scheduled for Thursday afternoon in front of Judge Arun Subramanian.
During the hearing, deadlines are expected to be established for both the defence and prosecution to submit arguments outlining the parameters for the trial proceedings. Combs’ legal team has expressed their desire to commence the trial in either April or May, whereas prosecutors have not indicated a preference for the timing of the trial.
The case was reassigned to Judge Subramanian after a previous judge recused himself due to prior connections with attorneys involved in the case. Combs, aged 54, has entered a plea of not guilty to the charges levelled against him last month, including allegations of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking dating back to 2008.
According to the indictment, Combs is accused of exploiting and mistreating women over an extended period with the assistance of a network of associates and employees, using tactics such as blackmail, kidnapping, arson, and physical violence to silence victims.
Despite repeated attempts by his legal team to secure bail for the founder of Bad Boy Records following his arrest on September 16, two different judges have determined that Combs poses a danger to the community if released. At a recent bail hearing, a proposed $50 million bail package, which included home detention and electronic monitoring, was rejected by a judge who concluded that Combs could tamper with witnesses and obstruct the ongoing investigation if released.
In an effort to overturn the bail rulings, Combs’ lawyers have appealed to the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, arguing that the proposed bail conditions would prevent any danger or witness tampering. They have urged the appeals court to disregard the lower court’s decision, which they claim aligned too closely with the prosecution’s arguments.
