North Korea has announced its intention to permanently close off its border with South Korea, cutting off all roads and railways connecting the two nations. While stopping short of formally declaring Seoul as its primary enemy for now, Pyongyang’s move signifies a significant escalation in tensions between the neighbouring countries.
According to the official KCNA news agency, North Korea plans to “permanently shut off and block the southern border” and strengthen its defence structures along the border areas. The military described this decision as a “self-defensive measure” aimed at preventing war and safeguarding North Korea’s security, as it perceives hostile forces becoming more aggressive.
The impact of this decision on relations with South Korea remains uncertain, as travel and exchanges across the border have already been suspended for years. Analysts are closely monitoring the situation as North Korea’s parliament, the Supreme People’s Assembly, convenes to announce key decisions, including a potential change to the country’s constitution declaring South Korea as its “invariable principal enemy.”
