Over the past year, there has been a seven percent rise in customer claims related to fires caused by these batteries, as reported by the insurance company.
The data released by Aviva covers fire claims reported during 2022 and 2023, revealing various incidents such as a house fire sparked by a rechargeable vape, another incident involving a house damaged by an e-bike battery left charging unattended, and cases of phones exploding during charging. This warning sheds light on the risks posed by lithium-ion batteries, which many people are not fully aware of, according to Aviva.
One particular incident involved a man who suffered third-degree burns when his vaping device exploded in his pocket, causing severe injuries. This serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with these devices. In a separate event in Essex in 2022, a house fire was triggered by a charging vape left unattended, resulting in significant damage to the property.
Despite these incidents, the awareness of the risks linked to rechargeable vapes remains low among the general public. Aviva’s research also revealed that a substantial percentage of people are unaware of what lithium-ion batteries are and the fire hazards associated with charging them. The lack of knowledge about warning signs indicating a failing lithium-ion battery, such as overheating and leaking, is also concerning.
