Former President Donald Trump is set to visit a Colorado city where crime rates have been declining, to highlight the supposed threat posed by criminal migrants. The city of Aurora is home to around 400,000 people spread across 164 square miles, encompassing a mix of upscale neighbourhoods, working-class areas, and the high-end resort where Trump will hold a rally.
Despite Trump’s portrayal of Aurora as a “war zone” due to immigrants, the reality is much different. The attention on Aurora stemmed from an incident in August within a single block of the city, involving an apartment complex housing Venezuelan migrants. Video emerged showing armed men in the complex, with reports of a shooting. Since then, authorities have apprehended suspects and tenants have attested to feeling safe in the area.
Aurora’s overall crime rate has been on a downward trend, mirroring national patterns. Studies show that immigrants are less likely to engage in criminal activities compared to native-born citizens. Yet, Trump has seized on isolated incidents of migrant violence to perpetuate his narrative of an immigrant “invasion” causing chaos in the country.
The Aurora community and local officials have pushed back against Trump’s exaggerated claims. Mayor Mike Coffman stated that concerns about Venezuelan gang activity have been overstated. Additionally, Aurora Police Chief Todd Chamberlain reported a decrease in major crimes in the city compared to the previous year.
While Aurora did see a minor increase in crime coinciding with the arrival of Venezuelan migrants in 2023, the subsequent months have shown a decline in criminal activities. The city council passed a resolution opposing migrant resettlement, but nonprofits and landlords have accommodated some newcomers.
Trump’s rhetoric about an influx of dangerous individuals from countries like Venezuela has been met with disbelief from Venezuelan migrants who feel safer in Aurora than in their home country. Despite occasional incidents, residents acknowledge improvements in the neighbourhood and overall sense of security.
City councilman Dustin Zvonek highlighted the importance of addressing specific issues within communities, even amidst a broader decline in crime rates. Residents emphasised the need to acknowledge and address local concerns, noting that a safe environment is paramount for all community members.
