Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs is set to remain in jail as a federal appeals court considers his bid for bail in his pending sex trafficking case. The decision was made by Circuit Judge William J. Nardini, who denied Combs’ immediate release while a three-judge panel reviews his bail request. Combs, known as the hip-hop mogul, has been held at a federal jail in Brooklyn since his arrest on September 16 on charges related to alleged coercion and abuse of women in a sex trafficking ring.
Combs’ lawyers had appealed to the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals after two previous attempts for bail were rejected. The charges against Combs include racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking, alleging that he manipulated female victims into participating in drug-fuelled sexual activities with male sex workers under the guise of “Freak Offs”. Despite pleading not guilty, Combs is facing serious allegations of using his influence and associates to perpetrate these crimes.
During a bail hearing, a judge dismissed a $50 million bail proposal that would have allowed Combs to be under house arrest with strict monitoring. The judge deemed Combs a danger to the community based on the evidence presented by the prosecution. Despite arguments from Combs’ legal team that he is not a flight risk given his status and responsibilities, the judge maintained his decision to keep Combs in custody.
Combs’ lawyers have not made a bail request to the new trial judge, Arun Subramanian. However, there seems to be a possibility for reconsideration as Subramanian expressed openness to addressing the issue in the future. The trial is scheduled for May 5, and concerns have been raised about Combs’ well-being at the Metropolitan Detention Center, where he is currently housed.
