UN Peacekeepers in South Lebanon Targeted in Israel’s Conflict with Hezbollah
Israeli airstrikes have targeted the headquarters of the U.N. peacekeeping force and other positions in south Lebanon recently, prompting widespread condemnation globally. The U.N. peacekeeping force, known as UNIFIL, reported new explosions hitting its headquarters on Friday morning, resulting in injuries to two peacekeepers. This came after Israeli forces struck the same position the day before, injuring two others.
As Israel intensifies its efforts against Hezbollah in the region, the 10,000-strong peacekeeping force finds itself increasingly at risk, underscoring the vulnerability of its personnel amidst Israel’s expanding ground invasion. These attacks occur against the backdrop of deteriorating relations between Israel and the United Nations due to Israel’s actions in Gaza. Earlier this month, Israel took the unprecedented step of declaring the U.N. chief persona non grata in Israel, marking a significant decline in relations.
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was established in 1978 to supervise the withdrawal of Israeli troops following Israel’s invasion and occupation of south Lebanon. The force also monitors and patrols the Blue Line, a border delineation between Lebanon and Israel. UNIFIL’s mission expanded after the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah, allowing peacekeepers to monitor the border and patrol a buffer zone to enforce a cease-fire.
With approximately 10,000 peacekeepers from around 50 countries stationed in south Lebanon, UNIFIL’s responsibilities include observing and reporting violations of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 conflict, as well as providing support to local communities.
In recent days, Israel’s targeting of UNIFIL positions has drawn global outrage. Italy and France, both with soldiers deployed in south Lebanon, summoned Israeli ambassadors in protest. Italy’s defense minister labeled the attacks as possible “war crimes,” a sentiment echoed by Human Rights Watch.
Tensions between Israel and UNIFIL have been escalating, with Israel requesting the peacekeeping force to relocate further north, a move UNIFIL rejected. Amid these developments, the peacekeeping mission’s operations have been severely impacted, with patrols compromised and personnel forced to remain in shelters.
The ongoing conflict presents challenges for UNIFIL, as its ability to fulfill its mandate is hindered by the fighting between Israeli forces and Hezbollah militants.
