New research suggests that the key to ensuring a harmonious relationship between your new puppy and cat lies in how you introduce them to each other. The findings indicate that allowing them to get familiar with each other gradually is more effective than immediate introduction.
Dogs Trust, as part of its Generation Pup research, is delving into the interaction between dogs and cats in households. According to the study, factors such as the speed of introduction and the age of the puppy can significantly impact their behaviour towards resident cats.
The research revealed that around 20% of pet owners introduce their new puppy to their existing cat immediately, with nearly 19% doing so in less than two hours. However, introducing puppies to cats over an extended period, especially when the puppies are younger than 12 weeks, increases the likelihood of a positive relationship between them.
Dr. Rachel Casey, a vet and director at Dogs Trust, emphasised the importance of gradual introductions. She recommended creating a safe space for the cat to escape and teaching the puppy to be calm around the feline. Dr. Casey noted that most dogs initially show undesirable behaviour towards cats, such as aggression or chasing, but gradual introductions can help foster calm and relaxed interactions.
The Generation Pup study, the largest of its kind in the UK with over 9,500 puppies enrolled, aims to investigate how genetics, early experiences, and the environment influence dogs’ behaviour. The latest findings from the study will be presented at New Scientist Live 2024 in London this weekend.
