A heroic spaniel who dedicates his life to protecting endangered seabirds on Scottish islands has been honoured with the title of “Animal of the Year”. Reid, a six-year-old springer spaniel, has been at the forefront of groundbreaking conservation efforts in the Scottish Isles, working tirelessly to safeguard bird populations from the threat of rats. These rodents pose a severe danger to seabird colonies by hunting eggs, chicks, and even adult birds.
Reid’s critical role involves identifying and locating rats that could potentially decimate seabird populations. Partnered with his handler Rachel Cripps from Biosecurity for Scotland, Reid patrols 38 seabird islands, including vital habitats like Bass Rock and St Kilda. Rachel explained the grave risk rats pose, highlighting how quickly their population can explode if left unchecked, posing an existential threat to seabird colonies. Moreover, rats are adept swimmers, capable of traversing between islands, compounding the challenge they present.
In addition to his detection work, Reid engages in outreach activities, including visits to schools where he educates children on the importance of conservation. The initiative aims to raise awareness and empower communities to actively protect wildlife by being vigilant. Recognising his outstanding contributions, Reid was bestowed with the prestigious title of Animal of the Year by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) at a ceremony in London.
Matt Collis from IFAW commended Reid for his unique role in conservation, emphasising the significance of his preventative approach in safeguarding seabirds in the Scottish Isles. Rachel expressed immense pride in Reid’s achievements, highlighting the invaluable role dogs can play in conservation efforts. The duo’s dedication and hard work were acknowledged at the IFAW Animal Action Awards, where Reid received his well-deserved accolade. The event took place at BAFTA in London, where Reid was celebrated for his exceptional service in protecting wildlife.
